The Speed of the Earth art installation enables participants to sense the speed of the Earth by carefully coordinating a mile-long row of strobes to flash at the rate of Earth's rotation at the latitude of Black Rock City. The timed flash rushes along the line of strobes placed exactly east-to-west, just as the Earth rotates, at the exact speed of the rotation. Standing still, a participant sees the flash moving in the far distance. In a second it is racing toward them. Then in another few seconds they feel the velocity as this cannonball of light zooms past them. It is a direct visceral feeling for what was formerly only an intellectual concept.
