Ephemeral Dust is a kinetic light and dust installation that mirrors the very ritual and lifecycle of Black Rock City. Just as the city rises from the playa to form beautiful, intricate patterns before fading back into the dust, this piece continually transforms a layer of dust into an ever-changing canvas of temporary art.
The installation is composed of two elements: a central kinetic sand sculpture and a surrounding geometric enclosure. At its core lies a low, circular platform blanketed in playa dust, acting as a stage for a single metal sphere. Driven by a concealed mechanism beneath the wood and steel framework, the sphere glides gracefully across the surface, endlessly carving shifting, mesmerizing patterns.
